CLUB RECRUITMENT · REPORT 002

Henry Heroki Mochizuki: recruit the wing-back, test the defender.

A 192cm player who can run the right flank is going to attract attention. For me, the interesting part is what Mochizuki can do once he gets there. There is a useful wing-back here, with crossing, aerial reach and a growing threat at the far post. Id recruit for that job first. Turning him into a complete possession full-back or a permanent centre-back would need a different body of evidence.

MY RECRUITMENT DECISION · ASSESSMENT

A clear role before a big projection.

Advance to full-match scouting for a right wing-back role. At 25, he should be assessed for meaningful first-team minutes now, with development on top. My preference is a team that gives him width, targets in the box and cover behind his forward runs. Id hold off on a bid until the defensive and pressured-receiving tests are passed.

The case is worth progressing. The evidence for every possible position is not equally strong.

RECRUITMENT BRIEF

Right wing-back shortlist.

Independent assessment · no reported transfer destination

Advance to full-match scouting

What gets him on the list

Wide delivery

Second at Machida for 2025 crossing CBP. A reason to look beyond the assist total. [06]

Attacking contribution from the flank

The Fukuoka report gives examples of both supplying a cross and arriving to finish one. [21]

What still needs proving

Defending without the safety net

Isolation, changes of direction and the recovery after losing the first duel.

Technical reliability under pressure

Receiving shape, weak-foot exits and delivery quality when the opponent closes the space.

THE DEVELOPMENT PATH

The university years did real work.

He came through Omiya’s junior setup and Mitsubishi Yowa before Kokushikan University, with Machida announcing his arrival for 2024 in May 2023. His own introduction stressed attacking involvement and work rate. The role he now offers wasnt invented after he turned professional. [01][09]

The early record is more useful than a neat late-bloomer label. In three verified 2019 Club Youth group games, he made two starts and one substitute appearance, totalling 115 regulation minutes without a goal. Those games lasted 70 minutes. These are tournament group records, not his complete youth career. [10][11][12]

By Kokushikan’s 2022 national university cup win, he started all four matches in their run and scored in the semi-final. The reconstructed total is 339 minutes. In 2023, JUFA also records a headed goal against Shizuoka Sangyo and a goal against Komazawa in the regional cup. There were attacking contributions before the J1 breakthrough. [13][14][15][16][17][18]

Oshima’s 2024 first-hand account describes a player used across several positions at Yowa, then developing as a right-back at university. My reading is that some of the current positional variety has roots in his education. It doesnt prove equal competence in every role. [19]

ROLE & TACTICAL USE

Wing-back first. Centre-back is a separate decision.

Football LAB’s starting-position records show the change clearly: 14 right-back, three wing-back and one centre-back start in 2024; 21 wing-back and five centre-back starts in 2025. These are the provider’s classifications at kick-off, not a map of every movement. [03][04]

Id start with him outside a back three: stretch the pitch, offer an outlet beyond the press, then attack the cross or arrive on the far side. That is my proposed use. A covering centre-back and a midfielder able to protect the inside channel should be part of the recruitment plan, rather than asking recovery speed to solve everything.

There is evidence of more than touchline running. In the August 2025 cup match against Kyoto, Mochizuki explained moving inside when a teammate held the width. The match report describes a turn and through-ball for Fujio’s winner. Useful evidence of an option; one successful sequence doesnt make him a ready-made inverted playmaker. [20]

Proposed right wing-back roleConceptual pitch: Mochizuki supplies width outside a right centre-back. Arrows indicate a proposed forward run and far-post arrival, with midfield cover behind. This is an illustration, not observed tracking.9RCBCMLCBCBRWBMochizukiWidth · delivery · far-post run · cover behind

PHYSICAL & AERIAL ATTRIBUTES

The unusual frame is useful. The job still matters.

At 192cm and 81kg, with a right-foot preference, he gives a coach an unusual wide-player profile. Oshima’s reporting describes speed that builds over a longer sprint and the stamina to repeat runs. I see a strong reason to test him in open space, but I havent verified a top-speed figure or acceleration test. [01][19]

Id separate reach from defensive security. Aerial results depend on where the duel happens, the opponent and who attacks the second ball. His size makes the back-post job interesting, but turning, checking the runner behind him and defending a low cutback are different tests. None can be graded from his height.

ATTRIBUTE PROFILE · PROVIDER MODEL

The change is towards the attacking flank.

Football LAB’s 1–20 Playing Style indices describe recorded playing characteristics. They are not my ratings out of 20, and a low build-up value is not proof of poor technique. Different roles and reference populations affect the comparison. [03][04]

The stronger crossing and attacking-aerial profile is consistent with a wider, more advanced job. Id use the build-up and defensive categories to choose film questions, rather than convert them into a technical or defensive ceiling. This is an interpretation of the provider profile. [04]

CHANCE CREATION

One assist doesnt tell the whole story.

In 2025 he recorded 25 last passes, third at Machida, and the club’s second-highest crossing CBP total behind Soma. The table below also shows passing, dribbling and receiving contributions. These points value actions in the provider’s model; they arent counts of crosses or take-ons. [06]

My inference is that he offered more supply than the single assist suggests. Id still want to code the delivery: early crosses, byline balls, cutbacks and crosses under pressure. A productive wide role and repeatable final-ball quality are related questions, but they arent interchangeable. [06]

The aerial return is encouraging. The crossing rate rests on just six completions from 11 attempts, while six successful dribbles came from 15. Id treat those as leads, not stable skill estimates. Passing accuracy also depends on risk and role; it doesnt measure pressured receiving. [08]

SCORING & SHOT QUALITY

Dont price him as a goalscorer.

The full 2025 season produced one goal from 25 shots. Football LAB gives him 3.153 xG, about 0.12 per 90, and 0.126 xG per shot. That is a modest scoring platform with underperformance in that season, rather than evidence of an established finisher. [04][07]

The current official appearance log reaches two goals from three shots across 513 minutes. That is a 66.7% conversion rate on an extremely small sample. Id be interested in the runs producing those chances, while treating a projection based on that conversion rate with considerable suspicion. [02]

The Fukuoka game on 18 October offers two useful examples. Japanese match reporting describes the outside breakthrough and cross for Yengi, then a long run to finish Akimoto’s delivery with his left foot. He also completed the match after the Singapore trip. These are reported sequences and workload evidence, not my own full-match film grading. [21]

DEFENSIVE ASSESSMENT

The unresolved part is the repeatable defending.

My main tests would be starting distance from the winger, the first two steps when the attacker changes direction, and when he passes a runner to the centre-back. Id also log back-post scanning while the ball is on the opposite side. These are recruitment questions, not faults ive established from event totals.

There is a useful example of responsibility in the Kyoto cup report: his late goal-line clearance followed the goalkeeper moving towards the near side. That supports a specific action. It cannot tell us how often he spots the danger across a season. [20]

For a permanent centre-back role, id demand a separate sample of line organisation, central box defending and passing when pressed from both sides. Five classified centre-back starts in 2025 give us a place to look. They dont settle the transfer projection. [04]

RECRUITMENT FIT · MY ASSESSMENT

Give him a job that uses the width.

The best initial fit, for me, is a club using wing-backs with a clear crossing target and a disciplined rest defence. He can compete for the right flank while providing an option on the right of the back three, subject to that separate defensive review. Id prioritise the actual route to starts over the status of the league.

Id be more cautious with a team buying him primarily to receive inside under heavy pressure and run possession. The recruitment brief should specify his first touch, next pass and recovery responsibilities. A player can improve technically at 25, but the budget should be justified by the contribution available now.

This is a role-led shortlist, not a claim that a named European club is interested. I havent established an asking price, wages, release clause or current medical clearance. Without those and a live squad-pathway check, attaching a destination would look more precise than the work supports.

BEFORE A BID

What id log next.

Isolated defending

Code 20 genuine one-v-one sequences across different opponents. Include failed presses and recovery situations, not just tackles won.

Receiving under pressure

Track first-touch direction, weak-foot exits and turnovers when the touchline removes one escape route.

Final-ball repeatability

Separate delivery type and pressure. Record the target, whether the ball reaches him and the quality of the following chance.

Aerial value by role

Separate attacking, defensive and wide outlet duels. Watch body orientation and the next action after first contact.

Work across a full match

Compare the early and late recovery runs, then the next fixture. One busy week is not a season-long repeat-sprint assessment.

Before any bid

Review six full games, scout live, agree the route to minutes, then establish contract terms, fee, registration eligibility and medical information.

HOW THIS WAS CHECKED

Evidence, scope and limits.

This is a desk-based report using primary match records, provider data and original Japanese interviews. Full-match film, live scouting and tracking have not been reviewed. The recruitment verdict and role illustration are assessments. There are no invented speed measurements, weak-foot ratings, pressure totals or percentile rankings.

Youth research used the historical registration 望月海輝. The youth table covers three 2019 group games and the complete four-game 2022 national university cup run, not all youth and university football. Complete age-group league statistics and assist totals could not be verified. Soccer D.B. was unavailable.

Football LAB’s current player variants lagged at different snapshots. Current league totals therefore use the dated J.League log through 21 October. Full 2024 and 2025 seasons, the 2026 special competition and the new 2026/27 league are kept separate. Football LAB’s Playing Style indices are provider-derived descriptors, not universal scouting grades.

FotMob’s retrieved page mixed a current headline with a detailed 534-minute panel whose embedded shot dates were February–April 2026. Only that explicitly historical panel is used for the event table. Its rounded xG differs from the shot-map sum; no precision beyond the displayed value is claimed. Current xG, xA, pass/duel totals, progression under pressure and same-role league percentiles remain unverified.

Official regulation minutes exclude added time. Count rates use count × 90 ÷ minutes. CBP rates are provider-displayed model rates. A recent research check does not make an older statistical sample current. Contract terms, availability to transfer, fee and medical clearance remain open.
