MATSU’S ROUND REVIEW · J1 2026/27

Round 9Kashiwa take top spot. FC Tokyo keep coming.

Kashiwa are top, Hiroshima have moved second, and FC Tokyo are making a pretty convincing case of their own. Only one point separates the top four after nine rounds. That is the table. The more useful question is which of these performances actually tells us something.

For me, Tokyo's improvement and Verdy's new shape are the developments to take forward. Kashiwa's win over Kobe was the biggest result, but their injury concerns and Kobe's goalkeeper change make it rather less straightforward for Sorare.

Biggest result

Kashiwa 4-2 Kobe. Ricardo's side take the lead in the title race, with plenty of attacking options making contributions.

Most interesting change

Verdy's switch to 4-4-2. Arai at left-back and Kim Hyun-woo starting give us something concrete to watch under Soma.

Result that needs context

Shimizu's comeback at Mito. Excellent impact from the bench, but the first half shouldnt disappear because they won.

Kashiwa Reysol4 – 2Vissel Kobe

Kashiwa take top spot. The goalkeeper questions havent gone away.

Match details, lineups & stats →

A proper result for Kashiwa. Fujio, Yamauchi and Kubo put them three up before Segawa added another from the bench. Kobe had a late response, but Kashiwa had already done the important work.

For me, the biggest selection point wasnt even a goalscorer. Maekawa came back in ahead of Gonda, which makes Kobe's goalkeeper situation considerably less comfortable for Sorare.

Selection & availability. Fujio continued ahead of Hosoya. Baba's early withdrawal forced Sachiro Toshima into the back three; Ricardo said the role had been worked on in training. Wakahara also came off following a collision, with Nagai replacing him.

From the managers. Ricardo praised Toshima's preparation. Skibbe was frustrated with Kobe's unnecessary turnovers, particularly when trying to build from the back.

My Sorare take

Fujio's continued selection is encouraging. Segawa is productive from the bench, but that still doesnt guarantee a start. Baba's knee concern and Wakahara's suspected concussion need follow-up; Nagai is an option if Wakahara cannot play, not a confirmed starter.

Kashima Antlers2 – 0Gamba Osaka

Kashima finally win again. Gamba still cant find a goal.

Match details, lineups & stats →

Ceará opened the scoring and Yuma Suzuki finally got his first league goal of the season. Kashima were more clinical, with Hirose supplying the opener and Misao helping create the second.

Gamba had moments, including Usami hitting the woodwork. But moments arent much use if nobody finishes them. The clean sheet mattered for Kashima as much as the goals.

Selection & availability. Hirose, Misao, Shibasaki and Minato Yoshida came into Kashima's XI. Suzuki described Yoshida as a shadow, helping connect the attack to midfield. Welton and Usami started for Gamba.

From the managers. Oniki praised the collective defensive work. Myojin saw better game management from Gamba, but acknowledged that lapses were still being punished.

My Sorare take

Ceará remains the obvious attacking reference point. Hirose returning with an assist is useful. Matsumura's continued involvement is encouraging, while Yan Matheus' availability remains a selection consideration.

FC Tokyo3 – 0Urawa Reds

FC Tokyo are becoming difficult to ignore.

Match details, lineups & stats →

Nagakura broke the deadlock after 63 minutes, with Anzai and Sato adding the other goals. The first half was competitive, but Tokyo were much more convincing once the game opened up.

Its the wider picture that interests me. Another win, another clean sheet, and an attack that is now giving them something to work with at the other end.

Selection & availability. Shuto Nagano made his first J1 start in midfield alongside Tokiwa, with Ko suspended. Ishihara started at right-back, with Muroya's soleus injury adding to Tokyo's availability problems. Anzai's movement between midfield and full-back is worth keeping an eye on.

From the managers. Matsuhashi identified the spaces behind Urawa's pressure as the route to improvement. Cho felt the performance had improved in parts, but accepted responsibility for the lapses at important moments.

My Sorare take

Nagakura is the forward id watch hardest. Tokyo's defensive options remain interesting, but a good team record doesnt remove the uncertainty around which full-backs start. Muroya has no published return timetable in the reviewed evidence.

Kyoto Sanga0 – 1Machida Zelvia

Machida get the points. Elias is the bigger immediate concern.

Match details, lineups & stats →

Kyoto made this awkward for Machida, with their pressure repeatedly disrupting the visitors. Then Akimoto came off the bench and scored in the 86th minute after Ogawa's header was saved.

For Kyoto, thats a frustrating combination: a competitive performance, no points, and their main attacking threat forced off early.

Selection & availability. Ogawa started again for Machida. Elias was replaced by Alex Souza after 29 minutes following an injury. The severity and return date were not established by the reviewed match report.

From the managers. Kuroda credited the impact of his substitutes. Popovic was positive about Kyoto's performance despite the defeat, which is fair given how close they made the game.

My Sorare take

Ogawa's repeated starts are a positive. Akimoto helped win the match, but a decisive contribution from the bench is not the same as starting security. Elias is the main availability check before making Kyoto attacking picks.

Avispa Fukuoka2 – 1Fagiano Okayama

A bloody important win for Fukuoka.

Match details, lineups & stats →

Maejima gave Fukuoka an early lead, Shirai equalised after the break, and substitute Yu Hashimoto supplied the winner. Fukuoka needed this far more than they needed a tidy performance.

Okayama improved in the second half, but their start left too much work to do. The difficult schedule is useful context. It doesnt make the first half any less disappointing.

Selection & availability. Ueshima and Miki were suspended for Fukuoka, with Oka, Yuzawa and Kai Maeda coming into the XI. Okayama were without suspended Lucão; Leo Gaúcho started and Esaka was on the bench.

From the managers. Kiyama admitted that Okayama had been warned about Fukuoka's intensity but hadnt dealt with it. He also pointed to the demands of their recent away schedule.

My Sorare take

Maejima's attacking contribution is encouraging. Hashimoto deserves attention after the winner, but id wait for the next XI before upgrading his starting prospects. Lucão's absence was suspension, rather than evidence of a lost place.

Cerezo Osaka0 – 0Yokohama F. Marinos

A draw, but some useful selection information.

Match details, lineups & stats →

Neither side found the finish they needed. For Cerezo, the attacking question remains more interesting than the point: changing the striker didnt produce a goal this time.

The substitution of Javi Hernández needs treating carefully. Machín explained it through his early booking and the matchup against Kondo. It shouldnt be turned into an injury story.

Selection & availability. Yokoyama and Sabbag started for Cerezo. Iikura continued in goal for Marinos, with Suwama and Quiñones in central defence. Toichi Suzuki completed the full match and described dealing with cramp.

From the managers. Machín's explanation supports a tactical reading of Hernández's withdrawal. Suzuki's own comments are the useful fitness detail: getting through 90 minutes is progress, even if it wasnt comfortable.

My Sorare take

Iikura and Suwama's continued selection is a positive. Suzuki's minutes are encouraging. Cerezo's striker role still needs monitoring; Sabbag starting once does not settle the hierarchy.

JEF United Chiba1 – 1V-Varen Nagasaki

JEF were seconds away. Thats what makes it hurt.

Match details, lineups & stats →

Yasui's early free-kick gave JEF the lead, but they couldnt finish the game. Yasuda came off the bench and equalised in the fifth minute of added time.

This wasnt simply a side defending for 90 minutes and eventually getting caught. JEF had opportunities to make the result safer. For a team down there, that is a painful distinction.

Selection & availability. Erison returned to JEF's starting attack. Matheus Jesus started for Nagasaki, while Yasuda's introduction at half-time eventually changed the result.

From the managers. Kobayashi's frustration centred on the chances JEF had wasted and the late concession. Fair enough. These are exactly the matches they need to turn into wins.

My Sorare take

Matheus Jesus' continued selection is useful. Yasui's direct free-kick is worth noting, without making one goal proof of a settled set-piece hierarchy. Yasuda's impact earns attention, not an automatic place in the next XI.

Mito Hollyhock1 – 2Shimizu S-Pulse

Shimizu win again. The first half wasnt pretty.

Match details, lineups & stats →

Shimizu failed to register a first-half shot. Yoshida made three changes at the break, Mito went ahead through Kato, and then Fujii helped drag the visitors back into it.

Fujii equalised before Sugai scored the winner in added time. Three points, but for me this is the scoreline that needs the most context. Shimizu changed the game; they didnt control it from the start.

Selection & availability. Germain began on the bench, with Oh Se-hun starting. Oh, Kitagawa and Inoue were replaced at half-time by Fujii, Germain and Shimamoto.

From the managers. Kimori was frustrated that Mito hadnt turned their first-half superiority into a stronger position. Yoshida's changes deserve credit, even if the initial selection plainly hadnt worked.

My Sorare take

Fujii is the interesting selection question after a goal and an assist from the bench. Germain's omission also needs watching. Sugai's winner is encouraging, but id be careful about expecting regular decisives from him.

Tokyo Verdy0 – 2Sanfrecce Hiroshima

A new shape for Verdy. A much better second half for Hiroshima.

Match details, lineups & stats →

Soma's first match brought a switch to 4-4-2, Kim Hyun-woo starting and Yuta Arai at left-back. Verdy made the first half competitive, but Hiroshima's half-time changes shifted the balance.

Matsumoto scored shortly after the restart and Akito Suzuki added the second. Gaul wanted more energy, less yellow-card risk in defence and a different forward profile. For me, the important bit is that he changed things rather than waiting for the original plan to work.

Selection & availability. Matsumoto, Higashi and Haller came on at half-time. Matsumoto's return was encouraging, while Asano also made an appearance. Ayukawa starting ahead of Haller doesnt remove the competition for minutes.

From the managers. Soma explained Arai's suitability through his individual defending and ball carrying. He also admitted misjudging Ichimi's condition after bringing him on and later taking him off again.

My Sorare take

Arai's role is the positional development to watch. Matsumoto's match return helps his availability picture. Ichimi's readiness needs caution, and Hiroshima's attacking hierarchy remains open.

Kawasaki Frontale1 – 2Nagoya Grampus

Nagoya finally stop the slide.

Match details, lineups & stats →

Haruya Fujii scored early from Morishima's corner. Wakizaka quickly equalised, but substitute Yamagishi supplied the winner. Nagoya ended their four-match losing run and gave themselves a bit of breathing room.

Kawasaki didnt impose themselves physically or in possession. Losing to a side that had been struggling this badly makes the performance harder to excuse.

Selection & availability. Yamahara and Uremović started for Kawasaki, while Taniguchi was outside the starting XI. Nogami, Morishima and Nagai started for Nagoya. Mateus Castro and Yamagishi both came on after 65 minutes.

From the managers. Hasebe criticised Kawasaki's intensity and failure to produce proactive play. He explicitly didnt describe the side as passive. Nagoya were simply better at the fighting and second-ball aspects, which is a pretty uncomfortable assessment for Kawasaki.

My Sorare take

Fujii's decisive contribution and Morishima's corner involvement are worth noting. Mateus' minutes are encouraging, but he is not yet an automatic full-match pick. Taniguchi missing one XI does not establish that he has permanently lost his place.

WHAT IM WATCHING NEXT

Five things to take into the next round

  1. Elias first. Kyoto need clarity on his injury before we can make a sensible call on their attacking picks.
  2. Kashiwa's availability: Baba's knee and Wakahara's suspected concussion. Nagai is a possible replacement, not a confirmed starter.
  3. Kobe's goalkeeper choice. Maekawa starting has reopened a position that was looking increasingly settled around Gonda.
  4. Verdy's roles and Hiroshima's attacking minutes. Does Soma keep Arai at left-back, and how do Ayukawa, Haller and Asano share the work?
  5. The players left out: Germain at Shimizu and Taniguchi at Kawasaki. One omission matters, but it isnt enough to declare that either has lost his place.

Gamba and Verdy are the sides id be most worried about at the bottom. Verdy at least have a new manager and a new shape to assess. Gamba keep finding signs of improvement without finding the results. Thats a difficult place to be once the pressure starts building.
